Many Math students tend to use hand writing rather than typing. This is because so many of the mathematical symbols used are not part of a normal keyboard and would take a long time to insert into the document through special virtual keyboards or other document functionality.
Shorthand allows students to write large volumes of data in an accelerated was especially when it is important to keep up with the spoken word such as a class lecture.
A typical shorthand has abbreviations, or symbols for commonly used phrases.
Typically students have the ability to record (write or type) up to 200 words per minute using shorthand versus writing in full at about 30 words per minute.
Solutions are handwritten and often shorthand was used.
